Distance Learning
St. John's School is committed to ensuring that students continue to receive the best education experience by our dedicated faculty during the campus closure in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have worked together to make sure students stay on track towards academic success, all the while learning at home.
Lower School Distance Learning
Google Meets is widely used for live class time in lower school. Distance Learning in lower school varies per grade level. Kindergarten through second grade has pre-recorded lessons, so parents have access to the lessons at any time. Live classes are at least twice a week where classes are broken down into very small groups and reading levels. Teachers have one-on-one live class with students who are learning English or who might need some extra help.
Intermediate level (grades 3 to 5) are similar. Live classes are about two to three times a week to work with students on the lessons. For students who are unable to attend, teachers record the lesson for viewing at a later time. |

The lessons in Specials are pre-recorded. Special teachers record and place videos on the teacher’s websites. These videos of the lessons are optional. Although we would love all students to follow their regular classroom schedules, we did not want them online for hours a day. Therefore, specials will not be grading for attendance, citizenship, or performance this quarter. Even if the classes are not graded, students still attend and turn in their work. In some classes such as PE and dance, parents record their challenge and turn it in. The videos are of both the parents and children doing the lesson. |

Middle and Upper School Distance Learning
During this time of PCOR1 when schools are not allowed to meet for regular face to face classes. St John’s School continues using Distance Learning. The principle medium for our classes will be on Google Meets, which is the teleconference platform used with our usual Google Classroom functions. While we try to maintain continuity with our regular program, there are a few adjustments:
SCHEDULE:
We will maintain our usual Day 1/Day 2 rotation of classes, however our live on screen time is a bit shorter than usual. Our regular 80 minute classes are reduced down to 50 minutes. This reduction in live class time, may mean that students will be expected to work more outside of class on research or writing assignments that can be done independently. Teachers are also expected to maintain virtual office hours from 2:00pm to 3:00pm each day, and are available by email throughout the day.
APPROACH TO EDUCATION:
A 21st century education focuses more on skills and critical thinking than on facts and information. As a result assignments and assessments will be slightly different in the distance learning mode. While a factual basis is necessary to support the larger goals, the focus in distance learning classrooms is more on higher order thinking skills. In a practical example, all assessments are designed to be “open book”, which will require more thought and interpretation than smpe recall.
