the Upper School

Picture
The Upper School helps students to prepare for success at their universities through the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Colleges and universities around the world recognize the rigor of these classes and, in some cases, offer college credit those classes. These classes begin in earnest in the 11th grade, but the curriculum in the 9th and 10th grades have been designed to align with and prepare students for the demands of these rigorous classes.

Entering the Upper School

Students enter the Upper School in 9th grade. The curriculum is designed to build upon the skills the students have learned in the earlier grades, and to further develop their academic skills to succeed at the university level.  Technology plays a more important role in the students' learning and assessments.  Upper School students are expected to bring their own device - preferably a laptop computer.  WiFi access is available throughout the campus

Core subjects

In 9th through 12th grade students take advanced courses in the main core subjects, English, Math, Science, Social Science, and Modern Languages.  This academic core is supported with a range of electives, including Physical Education, Performing Art, Visual Art, Music, and more that allow students to seek their passion and develop new interests.

Extra-curricular

Outside of the classroom, students engage in a variety of clubs, athletic teams, academic teams, and performance groups designed to help all students find a passion and to excel.  In addition our students participate in science fairs and conventions on Guam and around the world, and our musicians often perform in many local competitions and are invited to perform off-island as well.

Beyond graduation

Virtually all of St. John’s graduates attend university, with the vast majority attending schools in the United States mainland.  A small group of students choose to stay and study on Guam, and we have a growing percentage of students who choose to study in Asia, mostly in Japan or Korea.
