Middle School English
St. John’s Middle School English courses are designed to improve upon skills learned in previous years and to prepare students for the rigor of the SJS Upper School program. The study of literature is conducted through various genres such as short stories, poetry, drama, and novels. Grammar and composition are also key elements of these courses. |
Middle School English courses expose students to a variety of literary genres and cover such authors as Poe, Dickinson, and Shakespeare. Through the study of these short stories, poems, plays, and novels, we teach the students how to recognize literary elements such as plot, setting, and characterization. Great emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking skills needed for interpretation and thorough analysis of literature. Middle School English also reinforces grammar and composition skills through activities that encourage the practice and application of these skills. Quality essays and research papers are key components of the English curriculum.
The St. John’s Middle School English Courses take advantage of the many resources that are available. Some of these resources are programs contained in the Google Apps for Education, which include Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Google Slides. These programs are used as tools for students to showcase their learning. In addition, we often have peer discussions and opportunities for cooperative learning. The literature textbooks that students study are part of the Prentice Hall series, which is supplemented by different novels. The Write Source series and Writer’s Craft series are used to strengthen grammar and writing skills. |
