Middle School Social Science
Middle School Social Studies is designed to encourage students to appreciate the richness of the past and foster a joy of learning that comes from active inquiry, careful listening, and thoughtful writing. These ideas form the building blocks for future study, develop skills to navigate an increasingly diverse world, and guide students to a better understanding and appreciation of multiple and diverse cultures. |
The Middle School Social Studies sequence is designed to scaffold and bridge content and skills from Lower School to Upper School. Sixth Grade focuses on the second half of US History starting from the Civil War and continuing on modern times with an emphasis on civics. Seventh Grade will explore cultures and global issues through World Geography as a means to building ways to connect with people and ideas from multiple perspectives. In Eighth Grade students begin their study of World History with ancient hunter gatherer societies, the great civilizations across the globe, ending in the beginning of the modern era. This serves as the transition to their 9th grade World History course which picks up from the 1500’s and continues on to 20th century.
The Social Studies Department uses a wide variety of assessment methods to actively engage students in the lessons. Students learn to work with primary and secondary sources to write essays, create original political cartoons, participate in debates and class discussions, create websites, develop infographics, and utilize many other means to build their knowledge and skills, learn and share what they have learned with others. |
