Outrigger Canoe Paddling
Paddling is a high school sport offered in the Spring. Through a partnership between the IIAAG and Guam Canoe & Kayak Federation (GKCF), athletes practice with Galaide outrigger canoes in Tumon Bay. Traditionally, the race format for competitions is 500m and 1000m Sprints with separate lanes and buoy turns.

From the lead stroker to the steersman, each paddler in the six person crew plays an important part. Timing of all paddle strokes should be uniform and with power. Rather than the arms, it is the abdominal and lat muscles that are used the most. Even the legs are used.
Safety is a prime concern. Although the teams are restricted to the relatively safe and shallow waters inside the reef, participants must still pass a swim test and practice recovering from a flipped canoe. Canoes don't go in the water without life jackets. Additionally, the athletes are counseled on the importance of hydration and protecting themselves from the sun. The school provides all of the equipment, including paddles. |
