Middle School Departments

ARTS
The visual and performing arts are a fundamental part of our curriculum. Beginning in PreK 3 and continuing through the twelfth grade, students are involved in a variety of arts classes that link skill development, creative thinking, and understanding of the historical and cultural context of the arts.  Students are educated to develop and share their own creative voices through each performance and activity.

ENGLISH
St. John’s Middle School English courses are designed to improve upon skills learned in previous years and to prepare students for the rigor of the SJS Upper School program. The study of literature is conducted through various genres such as short stories, poetry, drama, and novels. Grammar and composition are also key elements of these courses.
LEARN MORE
MODERN LANGUAGES
The Modern Languages focuses on developing students’ ability to communicate in different languages. As students develop the competence to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish, Japanese and Chinese and interpret aspects of the culture in which the languages are embedded, they acquire the means to facilitate deeper interaction with the rest of the world.

MATHEMATICS
Our major aim is to prepare students for upper level math courses, to include both acceleration and remediation, by offering a wide range of classes that prepare students for Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate.

SCIENCE
The science courses in the middle school now take on a more specialized approach with concentration on earth science, life science, and physical science. Experimentation is now a bigger and more comprehensive part of the course, with the students being encouraged to investigate phenomena and concepts using their own experimental designs.

SOCIAL SCIENCE
Middle School Social Studies is designed to encourage students to appreciate the richness of the past and foster a joy of learning that comes from active inquiry, careful listening, and thoughtful writing. These ideas form the building blocks for future study, develop skills to navigate an increasingly diverse world, and guide students to a better understanding and appreciation of multiple and diverse cultures.
